Jon Lester is The Man

After watching the new Nike Livestrong video (above), I realized that I haven’t written about Jon Lester in this space yet. That is an absolute travesty – one I’m going to fix right now.

For the sake of Game Six readers, I’m not going to sit here and wax poetic for 1000 words about how much of a hero Lester is (though I certainly could), but I will say this:

The guy was dealt a shitty hand and, instead of using his illness as a crutch, he battled. He fought hard, and he won. The fact that he was able to return to the mound at all after sinking into the jarring condition we see in the video is a feat most people can’t hope to compete with. That he then built himself into a top-of-the-rotation starter, managed to succeed in the Boston pressure-cooker, and squeezed in a no-hitter along the way is almost hard to believe. His is a story straight out of Hollywood, and I wouldn’t be at all surprised if in fifteen years I’m taking my kids to The Comeback Kid: The Jon Lester Story at the local theater.

When Lester takes the mound tonight against the Royals wearing a Livestrong glove in order to help raise cancer awareness, it will mark yet another proud step on his inspirational journey. Win or lose, he belongs on that mound.

And we’re all better off because he’s there.
