Marv Albert: The best ever

Marv Albert: The best ever

A happy birthday wish from Game 6 to Marv Albert, who turns 68 today.

If you grew up watching the NBA, then I’m preaching to the choir here but I’ll say it anyway: With apologies to Johnny Most, Marv Albert is unquestionably the greatest basketball announcer ever, and quite possibly the best in any sport. As far as actively working announcers go, only Vin Scully and Jim Nantz are even in the discussion with Albert, and historically, you have to put him in a class with guys like Keith Jackson, Al Michaels, Pat Summerall, Curt Gowdy and Howard Cosell. Albert’s signature “YES” has been imitated on basketball courts, on playing fields, and in homes for more than thirty years and his “OH, a spec-TAC-ular move by Michael Jordan” call during Game 2 of the 1991 NBA Finals remains one of the greatest sports calls of all time. It’s an absolute tragedy that he no longer works the NBA FIinals, buried as he is on the minor league TNT network. Wherever big time basketball is being played, Marv Albert should be calling the action. He’s earned that.

So a happy birthday to Marv, and here’s hoping he stays behind the microphone for many years to come.

Basketball fans – and the game’s history – should be so fortunate.
